Throughout the millennia, many tribes viewed their environment as capable of bringing their ancestors back to life. Natural resources, according to these tribes, allowed descendants to meet their ancestors. In particular, stones and soil (both capable of outliving humans) were considered particularly powerful media which allowed the spirits of the dead to become immortal. Such mystical force created a bridge between the living and the dead, allowing them to remain as one, strong community.   

 

Indeed, life springs forth from soil. And when life fades away, it returns to its origin: soil. It is an everlasting cycle that allows life to flourish. The tree must bury its roots deep underground to provide itself, and its fruit – us - with essential nutrients. No matter where we are, our origins allow us to survive and thrive by providing us with a clear identity. It is a force that is not visible to the human eye, but its strength is as powerful as that of an umbilical cord. 

 

With this in mind, My Treasured Haven celebrates our roots, the role that our families play in our lives, and Apulia, the region where the Author grew up. By remembering the places in which we have grown up, the places that have shaped us, we can re-experience the palpable joy of the time spent with those who are now gone.      

 

Holding onto cherished memories, of tranquil days of yore, will no doubt provoke nostalgia. However, such bucolic imagery will also allow us to feel gratitude and pride towards our very own roots.
